For a long breath, Zach returned Seth’s glint, then shifted to Barbie, to the heartache and weariness peeking shimmering in her gaze, and knew he lost this go ‘round. Same as the other day.
Maybe forever.
Twisting around, he took in the table set with china, the floor-to-ceiling windows and the mountains beyond, the credenza with the Kachina dolls, caught the last notes of a ballad and swiped his coat off the sofa. Faced her and watched Seth safely guide her away from the door to the windows. Took one last look at the photo then dropped it on the coffee table next to the lilies, a big piece of him splintering.
“I’ll go, but before I do, tell me this. I’m in the picture with that woman. The cabin is behind her and me. Who’s standing in front of us taking the picture?”
She opened her mouth to reply, but words didn’t pass her lips. Instead, she stared at him blankly, and he could feel her thoughts churning for an answer.
“Exactly.” He moved to the door, opened it. Faced her again. “You promised to never give up on us. Reckon you were so quick to doubt me that you forgot that.”
He stepped into the hall and tugged the door shut, punched the button for the elevator and rode the car to the first floor, exited and cast a glance at the ceiling, to her suite several floors above.
This ain’t over, Barbie. I’ll find the bastard, make him tell you the truth. He stomped down the hall into the parking lot, and the cold.
